Over three design phases, this study will explore how high school students and teachers can use creative activities to support learning with and about generative AI. This study will contribute to emerging understandings about the impact of generative AI on youth writing.

Phase 1: Learning from Youth’s Creative Writing with AI
Learning from high school youth about what they are already doing with generative AI through surveys, AI writing contests, and more.
Phase 2: Tracing Youth’s genAI Writing Practices
Building case studies of youth writers and design of critical and creative practices with AI workshop for youth from phase 1 data.
Phase 3: Designing for New genAI Learning opportunities
Hold AI workshops for youth designed with critical, creative and experimental approaches to AI. Design iterative workshops based on learnings from each.
WAi design based research study is guided by the following research questions:
How are young people using generative AI in their everyday composing lives?
How does writing with generative AI influence youth’s thinking about ethical and rhetorical dimensions of writing?
What pedagogical and curricular interventions support young people’s critical digital literacies with genAI?
